Typically speaking, bathrooms are the smallest rooms in the house, deliberately designed in such a way as to maximise living space elsewhere. Historically, these rooms were also small because it made them easier and more efficient to heat, as well as being easier to clean and maintain.
Some bathrooms donβt even have windows, again to maximise exterior wall space for bedrooms and other living spaces, as well as driving down construction costs.
If this all sounds like a familiar story and youβre dealing with similar rooms at home, youβll be pleased to hear that there are ways you can make even the smallest of bathrooms feel light and airy.
Donβt believe us? Here are a few little tips and tricks of the trade to try!
1. Invest in bathroom mirrors
Using bathroom mirrors strategically throughout the space will help bounce light around, making the room feel bigger and brighter without much effort and without spending the big bucks.
If you position your main mirror opposite a light source, you can easily make a big difference to how the room looks and feels.
2. Go for light colour palettes
For bright and fresh interiors, always go for a lighter colour palette in neutrals, whites, greys or pastels.Β
Pastel pink bathrooms are actually proving increasingly popular at the moment so this would be a great choice. And donβt forget that if you use gloss paint in some places, youβll make the room feel even bigger!
3. Install floating bathroom fixtures
Keeping the bathroom floor clear and free from clutter will help make the space feel bigger so, to this end, consider investing in floating fixtures like wall-mounted toilets, sinks and shelves to reduce the amount of bulk in the room.
4. Use glossy tiles
We previously mentioned gloss paint as a way of creating a sense of airiness in the bathroom, but you can up the ante in this regard if you go for gloss tiles, as well.
Interestingly, you can also make the space feel bigger if you opt for larger tiles rather than small ones. Small tiles will feature a lot of grout lines and this can add to the sense of clutter, but with larger tiles you can avoid this and enjoy a more continuous surface.
Or, as an alternative, you could ditch the tiles altogether and go for a resin-poured bathroom floor, so thereβs no grout to look at whatsoever!
5. Use transparent fixtures & fittings
Never underestimate the power of glass when it comes to making small bathrooms feel bigger and lighter! Glass shower screens and shelving can open up the space easily without stretching the budget.
