Cast iron column radiators will always be a wonderful addition to any home, working well with both traditional and contemporary interiors alike.
Because theyβre so commonplace in homes today, itβs easy to forget that central heating hasnβt always been around. In fact, weβve only had this kind of central heating since around 1855, with the likes of open fireplaces and hearths used to keep us warm and snug before that.
Steam heating was actually revolutionised by Nelson H Bundy, who came up with the idea of the Bundy Loop design for cast iron steam-based sectional radiators.Β
Here, looped pipes or coils are connected to a base for more efficient heating and flexibility of size - and this design still heavily influences radiator styles even now!
So, if you are planning on bringing in a stunning traditional column radiator at home, first of all - great choice! Second of all, here are some ideas from the Bathroom Kingdom team to help you style your interiors to suit.
1. Position them prominently
Youβll find that these radiators are beautiful in their own right so you may well want to turn them into one of the main focal points in the room.Β
This can be achieved by positioning them under large windows or running vertically up a wall so that they really stand out. Alternatively, paint them in a contrast colour to the walls so they really pop!
2. Blend the radiators in
If youβre keen for a more minimalist approach with your interior design, consider painting your radiators the same colour as the wall so that it blends in and creates a seamless sense of flow throughout the space.
3. Position against brick
If itβs an industrial look youβre after, this can easily be achieved by wall-mounting your radiator on an exposed brick wall. These two features work really well together, while still maintaining a homely look and feel.
4. Combine with towel rails
Cast iron radiators can also be used in the bathroom so donβt feel as though you canβt add one in here if you want to!Β
These rooms are typically among the smallest in the house and these traditional radiators can add bulk, but if you opt for a mini version and have it fitted in the middle of a heated towel rail, you can get the look easily and save space at the same time!
5. Add in a shelf
Another space-saving idea and a way to really draw attention to your beautiful new radiator is to turn the top of the radiator into a wooden floating shelf, perfect for photos, candles, plants and all your precious trinkets.
Of course, these are just a few ways in which you can style your radiators. Weβd love to see what your finished projects look like - so drop us a line to show off your homes!
